The Last Great First Challenge Part 2

This week and last week’s challenges are inspired by The Last Great First, an unsupported ski trip covering 2600km across the Antarctic from coast to coast by Doctors Gareth Andrews and Richard Stephenson, who are both former scouts. They will be gathering crucial climate data to help address climate change. Find out more about their trip here.

This week’s challenges are under Outdoor.

Patrol Challenge: Up and About

What’s better than being in the great outdoors? This challenge is to go for a hike in your patrol. Think about where you want to go and what you need to bring.

Resources Required:

  • Maps
  • Day pack
  • Water bottle
  • Hat
  • Snacks
  • Good sturdy shoes

Individual Challenge #1: A Slippery Slope

This challenge is to recreate The Last Great First. Make a ski track and skis, and go for a ski (safely).

Resources Required:

  • Household equipment
  • Safety equipment if required (eg. helmets)

Individual Challenge #2: What’s that path?

This challenge is to go for a walk or a hike, and try to make a picture with your path. Can you walk in the shape of an animal, country, spell out a word, or anything else you want to create? Track your path with a fitness tracker, or draw it on a map.

Resources Required:

  • Map/Fitness tracker
  • Day pack
  • Water bottle
  • Hat
  • Snacks
  • Good sturdy shoes

    Individual Challenge #3: UnTentable

This challenge is to set up your tent in an unusual (but safe) place with you in it. Think creatively about where you could set up your tent. In your house, in a local area, but somewhere you wouldn’t expect to find a tent. Ensure your set up is safe and monitored by an adult.

    Resources Required:

    • 2 Person Tent (minimum)

    Individual Challenge #4: Virtual Trip

Can’t go outside? This challenge is to virtually tour somewhere you’ve never been before, there are options all over the world. YouTube has some excellent walking tours, or we recommend this site from Google which explores some of the US national parks.

    Resources Required:

    • Computer/Mobile device

    Evidence Submission:

To enter the running for this week’s individual prize, a Last Great First scarf and woggle, upload a photo of you completing one or more of the individual challenges to the JotForm. Upload a photo of your patrol attempting the patrol challenge to go in the running for the patrol prize.
